Who are Between the Lines?
Between the Lines books have created a new children’s book – Behind the Magic Door: A Letter Adventure. Their aim is to create beautiful, personalised books that take children on their own unique journey while promoting creativity, imagination and curiosity. At the core of the business is a family; Richard and Joanne Warriner are co-founders, their daughter Nicole Warriner is the author, and their young son Luke Warriner has provided inspiration (and thorough product testing!). They’re also joined by Adam Rushton who has illustrated the books.
What did we achieve?
We created an image composition and rendering engine that automates print of personalised children’s books, using the letters from the child’s name to create a unique adventure story for each child. The books can be further personalised for a boy or a girl, and for different explorers, and a personalised message can be added inside the first page.

Why did Between the Lines need our help?
Between the lines had a great idea and some fantastic artwork, but they needed a partner who could make their project a reality. So they approached HP to confirm which companies were using the latest high spec digital print technology that would help them to realise their vision. HP put our name forward along with four other companies, and after going through the tender process and a site visit we won the project.
How did we do it?
We started with around 1000 pages of content that covered all variables; these include the story characters for each letter of the child’s name as well as secondary characters for children with the same letter repeated in their name. Diversity is also important to Between the Lines, with a clear ambition to spread magical bedtime stories around the world. To help broaden their international appeal they introduced different character options for different hair and skin colours. Each page was then catalogued and we worked closely with Richard to establish a fixed data structure and gave feedback on the existing artwork to make sure it would all work with our print capabilities. From there we created a set of page templates and applied a set of rules and logic that combine with the data to create each individual page and puts them in the correct order.
The real challenge to this project was automation so the whole thing could run seamlessly. To achieve this, we built an API to communicate between the Behind the Magic Door bespoke website and our document composition and image rendering engine. We worked closely with Between the Lines’ design agency to set this up and ensure we would automatically receive all orders from the website and they could be processed through our MIS system. Building the API meant we could offer the best of both worlds, Between the Lines could have their bespoke website and we could utilise our systems to automate the whole project.
The result is a seamless workflow. A customer orders their book on the Between the Lines website, there are also options to include gift wrap or a poster which we print here too. We receive a daily data feed, the document composition software creates the book within a matter of seconds and the artwork is sent down to press and production and despatched within 48 hours. We developed all packaging to ensure safe delivery of each book and hold all stock on site. Each job is tracked throughout the business with a barcode, once an order is despatched an automated confirmation email is triggered to go out to the customer confirming their order is on its way. Simple. That’s what we do, we take the complex and make it simple.
